Your Guide to Picture-Perfect Family Photo Outfits!

Family Photo Outfit Style Guide

By The Range Photography

Welcome!

Here’s a detailed guide to styling your outfits. From color palettes to accessories, we’ve got you covered!

Step 1: Start with a Color Palette

Choose 2-3 main colors and 1-2 accent tones. Neutrals like ivory, beige, and soft gray work well in most settings and add timelessness to your photos. If you want more color, try incorporating blush, navy, or sage as accents.

Pro Tip: Look around your home for color inspiration if you plan to display the photos on your walls.

Step 2: Coordinate Without Matching

Gone are the days of matching outfits! Instead, aim for a coordinated look by choosing complementary colors and styles. If someone is wearing a pattern, have the other family members wear solid colors that match.

Example: If one family member wears a floral dress, others can wear coordinating shades pulled from the floral print.

Step 3: Consider the Season & Location

Dress for the environment where you’ll be photographed. Think about the season and location to ensure that your colors and styles complement the scenery.

• Fall: Choose warm tones like mustard, rust, and forest green.

• Beach: Soft blues, sandy tones, and whites look beautiful.

• Urban/City: Jewel tones or modern neutrals stand out.

Pro Tip: Check sample photos of your session location to see how colors will look in that setting.

Step 4: Layer for Depth & Texture

Layers add visual interest and depth to your photos, and they also allow flexibility in changing weather. For example, a light jacket, cardigan, or scarf can add texture and dimension.

Bonus for Kids: Add fun layers like suspenders, hats, or hair accessories for a playful touch!

Step 5: Keep Patterns Minimal

Patterns are a great way to add personality, but they can be distracting if overused. Try limiting patterns to one or two family members and keeping them subtle.

Avoid: Large logos or bold graphics, as they can draw attention away from faces.

Step 6: Focus on Comfort & Fit

Choose outfits that everyone feels comfortable in! Remember, family photos often involve movement, sitting, and snuggling, so make sure everyone’s clothes fit well and allow for natural movement.

For Kids: Double-check outfits for itchiness or tightness, so they feel happy and relaxed!

Step 7: Don’t Forget Shoes & Accessories

Choose shoes that match the formality of your outfits, and keep them neutral. Accessories like jewelry, hats, and belts can polish the look, but keep them subtle so they don’t overshadow your faces.

Avoid: Bright or neon accessories, as they can be visually overpowering.

Step 8: Test It Out & Take a Family Selfie

Lay everyone’s outfits out together or try them on and snap a quick family selfie. This can help you see how the colors and styles look together and make any adjustments if needed.

Pro Tip: Feel free to share your outfit ideas with us before the session, and we’ll be happy to give feedback!

Questions Wedding Photographers Ask

Choosing a wedding photographer can feel overwhelming. We understand that you may face questions you haven't considered yet. Hopefully this helps a little.

As wedding photographers it is essential to engage in open communication that helps clarify expectations and needs. This is one of the many reasons we usually try to set up a time to chat over the phone before throwing out official numbers. Here are some helpful tips and important questions brides should consider to receive a more accurate photography quote.

Questions Wedding Photographers Ask

  1. How many hours of photography coverage do you want?

    • This question is vital as it helps determine the photographer's presence on your wedding day. For example, if you choose 6 hours, the coverage might include the ceremony and part of the reception. If you select 10 hours, you can include the preparation time leading up to the ceremony as well as the full reception.

  2. What specific moments and photos do you want to remember?

    • Think about the key moments you'd like captured. Would you like traditional shots such as the first look or family portraits? Do you want candid photos of guests enjoying the celebration? Providing this information will help the photographer prepare and allocate time for those specific moments.

Sample Shot Lists Based on Coverage Hours

6-Hour Coverage:

  • Getting Ready Shots (Bridal party, details of dress, etc.)

  • First Look and Couple Portraits

  • Ceremony Highlights

  • Family Portraits

  • Reception Candid Shots (entrance, speeches, first dance)

  • Additional Getting Ready Shots (Groom's side)

10-Hour Coverage:

  • All 8-Hour Shots

  • In-depth Getting Ready Coverage (hair and makeup details)

  • Extended Couple Portrait Session

  • Full Reception Coverage (including after-party or send-off)

  • More extensive Family Portraits and unique guest shots

Additional Tips

  • Consider Your Timeline: Discuss your wedding schedule with your photographer. They can help you allocate the right amount of time for various parts of your day.

  • Prioritize Key Shots: Create a list of must-have photos and share it with your photographer. This ensures that the most important moments are captured perfectly.

  • Trust Your Photographer’s Expertise: Don’t hesitate to ask for suggestions! Experienced photographers often know how to create the best shot opportunities based on the venue and timeline.

9 Reasons to Book a Senior Portrait Session

Grad Announcements

One of the staples of graduation is sending out graduation announcements to family & friends, letting them know of your senior's achievement. Custom announcements not only show off your senior photos, but can be personalized with grad party details, activity/academic achievements. The possibilities are endless!

Thank You Cards

After your graduation and party, it's always nice to send out thank you cards to guests and those who sent a gift. Why not personalize them with a gorgeous photo? We can help you create something unique and personal.

Gift Prints

Family members LOVE getting beautiful prints of your senior photos! Senior portraits make great gifts for birthdays & holidays! Grandparents love to frame your photos to hang in their house to show you off! Having high-resolution photos is essential to being able to have quality prints to give to those that mean the most to you.

Graduation Party

Photos are one of the main decorations at graduation parties! You can line your yard with pictures from kindergarten through senior year, you can have a slideshow of photos playing on a TV, you can spread photos out on a table for people to take home, you can print out a large photo with a mat for people to sign as your grad party guest book. The list goes on and on!

You can also use your senior pictures for your graduation party invites! There's SO many ways you can incorporate your senior pictures into your graduation party!

College Announcement

One of the most exciting parts of senior year is announcing what college you'll be attending in the Fall, especially for athletes. Tell friends and family where your next chapter lies with a college announcement complete with a photo or two from your session.

Sorority Pledge Photos

Many seniors come to their sessions knowing that they're going to use some of their photos to pledge with. Know what picture outfit you'll likely pledge with so we know to intentionally take the best photos with pledging in mind.

Social Bio Photo

If you're applying for an internship or a job beyond graduation, remember that most employers are going to look up your social accounts. Make sure your profile photos are clean, non-selfies, and showcase the kind of employee you want to be.

Email Signature

You'll be shocked at how often you use your email after you graduate and it's usually used most between college and employment dealings. Adding a photo from your session to your email signature ensures you make an impression and look professional when emailing your boss and college professors.

Personal Branding

A new must-have in the professional world is establishing a personal brand. After graduation, your social media can become the perfect place to build your personal brand for potential employers and other opportunities. Starting early helps establish your identity for future ventures and collaborations.

The Difference

While yearbook pictures with your schools contracted studio typically present a posed, rigid, and stiff version of a student, The Range Photography’s Luxury Senior Portrait Sessions capture the unique personality and individual spirit of each senior. “Senior Portraits aren’t just a rite of passage, they are your unique story.”
